Thinking about changing careers, starting out on your own, making a bit of extra money, or simply have a great idea you can’t keep to yourself? If you’re a UCLan graduate, we offer our self-employment support as part of the lifetime offer our alumni receive, so why not take advantage? It doesn’t matter how long ago you graduated, we’re always happy to help.

Thinking about going self-employed, starting a business on the side or even just getting together some holiday money? Freelancing is a great way to test the waters of working for yourself. With the help of our online platform ‘Flightpath’, you can quickly learn the ins and outs of freelancing and develop the skills you need and how to get going.

We can help you get registered, show you how to invoice and even help you find your first customer.

We also run ‘UCLan Talent – a platform for freelancers to seek work, or for businesses to hire our student and graduate freelancers.

We have a passionate, approachable team of business mentors who can support you 1 on 1. Each mentor has or has had their own business, ranging from bookkeeping, recruitment, photography and live performance – which means they know what they’re talking about! In addition, if you have questions that are specific to your field, we also have a bank of external mentors that may be able to help.

In particular, our coaching can be a huge relief if you’re working on your own or have no prior experience. We work at your own pace and you can meet us as many times as you need. If you like, we can even find you a coaching buddy so you can help each other along the way as friends.

If you’re still based in Lancashire, why not come along to some of our many workshops held on the Preston campus?

Our main workshops are each 3-hours long and have been dubbed the ‘Propeller Enterprise Programme’. These are essentially a ‘start-up 101’ spread across 6 workshops, and are accompanied by Bite-sized Briefings which can top-up knowledge on specialist areas. We have monthly networking events and lots of one-off events, so make sure you check out our calendar!

Now attending workshops is even easier – we are delivering online during the lockdown!

Right in the heart of UCLan, we operate a social working space called the ‘Propeller Hub‘. We know that working from home can be tough, but during those early days it can be hard to justify renting an office. Social workspace is a great in-between and we offer our own Propeller Hub from as little as £0.68 a day*.

We have a thriving community of start-up businesses connecting with each other and making use of our meeting space. Membership comes with telephony, printing and a coveted UCLan trading address amongst our services, so it’s worth stopping by for a tour. Both hot-desks and dedicated rental desks are available.

Enterprise is not just about business, which is why we also help social enterprises and charities. If you run a community group or work as a volunteer, you can still get a lot of benefit from engaging with us. We also work alongside the Social Innovation team at UCLan, who look at building co-operatives in line with the Preston Model.

We have a strong track record of supporting voluntary organizations, charities, and community projects. If you’re looking at making a positive impact, we can help you deliver fresh ideas for services, products or activities that will improve your local community.

Recent graduates have a few additional perks, depending on how long ago you graduated.

  • Free hot-desk for 6 months
  • Eligible for the Propeller Enterprise Award for 1 year
  • Access to UCLan Talent for 2 years

Although these are time sensitive, remember that all UCLan alumni can access the other Propeller services, regardless of how long ago you graduated.
