This networking event is aimed at UCLan staff members.
The terms ‘gig economy’ and ‘portfolio career’ get bandied about a lot, but they’re not just buzzwords; they’re the new way of life for many 20-something year olds.
With the rise of zero-hour contracts, temporary positions and a ferociously competitive jobscape, a lot of our students and graduates are finding themselves looking for alternative employment. Whether they’re looking for something to tide them over until they get their dream job or looking to shape their own future – self-employment is an increasingly popular option.
So, what are the benefits?
Well, for some, having self-employment on their CV helps them get a permanent job in their chosen field! Being able to show that they have the right skills and knowledge to run a business is highly-valued by many employers.
For others, running a business or consultancy lets them do things their own way, rather than fitting into a company that doesn’t match their values.
Then there’s those that simply want a bit of extra money on the side, freelancing alongside poorly-paid internships or entry-level jobs.
